- We’re immediately given some quotes from Matthew about how sexual thoughts about women are crimes. Seriously, the first passage messed me up so much as a kid going through puberty.
- Our carriage passengers are talking about the state of marriage. A woman expounds on a point she has, but Tolstoy describes her as fashioning a strawman against one of the men because “lol women.”
- A merchant talks about abusing women into submission specifically regarding adultery. When the narrator (one of the men in the carriage) points out that the merchant was just having a conversation about how he was getting drunk and being unfaithful, the merchant gets fussy. Double standards.
- The merchant leaves their carriage and then everyone else is like, “LMFAO what an idiot.”
- One of the passengers, Pozdnyshev, reveals himself to be a man who killed his wife. He asks the essential Haddoway question and suggests that all marriages are false. He also says that while a man in slight circumstances can be faithful, it’s impossible for a woman to be.
- We as people need to be willing to admit that it is a normal human experience to be attracted to more than one person or even no one at all. Imagine entering a polyamorous marriage and how this would ease many matters. Fuck, just imagine being able to TALK reasonably to your spouse. Nuts.
- The narrator is cordial to Pozdnyshev, and the latter tells him the story of how he came to murder his wife.
- This feels like having the opportunity to sit beside O. J. Simpson and have him tell you If I Did It. On one hand, he’s repulsive and you want him to move. He shouldn’t be walking around. On the other, but much lesser, you’re getting insider knowledge of his evil.
- This mad lad, Pozdnyshev, was paying women for sex so they couldn’t complain about pregnancy. These were not sex workers. Girls you NEED to warn each other!!!
- Pozdnyshev thinks that instead of trying to cure STDs or make sex safe, we should just ban recreational sex. We already know that this just leads to an increase in STDs and sex crimes (justified in the case of trafficking and unjustified in the case of mislabeling transgender people).
- He thinks having recreational sex makes him a libertine, and I wouldn’t use that word as I associate it with extreme paraphilia. He might have a sex addiction, but even that has yet to be proven.
- I agree that we need more novels were the Prince Charming™️ is being a fresh hoe.
- All women are like prostitutes because all women like to dress as is the current fashion, and Pozdnyshev finds the current women’s fashion sexually arousing. Rather, Pozdnyshev suggests that in brothels, men seek the same qualities they do outside of them. There’s so much to unpack here LMFAO
- What about women who reject current fashion trends?
The gays and trans people??Sshh No NO- What if the current fashion trend is a burqa? Are the women still to blame then?
- Again, this is moreso evidence that we should be more open about our sexual desires. Pozdnyshev’s reality comes from conservative views in which we must pretend something else is going on.
- Oh noooo, he says just like the Jews are getting revenge for being forced into the merchant class, women are getting revenge by being sneakily sexual.
- Take a drink every time this muthafucka uses a form of “vile”.
- Straight people are exhausting
- This actually reminds me of conversations I’ve seen about people living separate from their spouses, not out of spite and not necessarily because they have an open relationship, but because it allows them to live their happiest lives. Some people need more space and alone time.
- At the time this story was published perhaps there was a close male to female ratio, it is now the case that generally there are more women (of course, this varies regionally, like in India or China).
- If you can’t appease your sexual desires with masturbation while your wife is nursing, you are the problem.
- He doesn’t SAY IT, of course, but I believe he’s alluding to anal sex. He then says this is driving women insane. Let’s not fall for this idea that women never want anal. The issue here is that their spouses are pressuring them into sex when they’re tried.
- Hey, hate to break it to you, but there are animals besides homo sapiens that have sex for pleasure, including dolphins; in fact, all female mammals have a clitoris, which exists solely for stimulation.
- “…they do not see and they do not wish to see that slavery still exists, because people, just the same as ever, like to profit by the labor of others, and they consider it fair and honorable to do so.”
- There’s nothing more annoying than someone who just repackages the conservative status quo and insists it’s a new thought never before adhered to. Woman’s virginity has always been hypocritically upheld as a woman’s best position until after her marriage. Men have always wanted both a slut and a virgin.
- ??? Woman’s only temporary escape from the Ouroboros is to nurse a child. What a life.
- Another hurt person blaming modern medicine instead of the forces preventing better knowledge. Your uneducated attacks upon doctors will lead to increased suffering, then you’ll double down about how the doctors aren’t doing their jobs. Keep drinking that snake oil, bud.
- What he’s describing is for-profit medical malpractice. This happens because of capitalism–when hospitals are run as businesses instead of institutions with the sole priority of helping human beings.
- Yes, I’m glad your children have been taken from you, and you honestly shouldn’t have visiting permissions. A man willing to kill his wife would easily kill his own children. We’ve seen this in reality again and again. And his ramblings about how the whole world is doomed because of sexual intercourse doesn’t give him the marks of a good or trustworthy parent or human being.
- Men are so obsessed with women that they can’t fathom that women don’t give a shit about what men want lmao
- The end of chapter 14 reminds me of this Felipe Di Poi cartoon: https://youtube.com/shorts/u93sMz9-9XY?si=zmK2v_sJ4wxohrtv
- If yall motherfuckers don’t stop having kids…
- This man literally suggested that true Christians don’t grieve or trifle over dead children. Maybe this is why fundamentalists seem so keen on suggesting that they have a right to kill their own kids.
- To illustrate that his wife has grown more attractive, he compares her to a choice horse…this seems to sum up the whole problem with how he views women.
- The man who makes Pozdnyshev jealous apparently has a nice ass lmao The way he envies Trukhashevsky continues to hint of homosexuality.
- They involve the kids in their arguments so now the children are going to grow up with unresolved trauma. This is both of the parents’ fault, by the way, though I’d still say the wife has less social power here to make decisions such as calling for a divorce, the healthiest choice when spouses find they are continously fighting in front of their kids. There are non-legal repercussions she’d face more heavily that Pozdnyshev, ironically one of the plot points of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Perhaps he forgot or stopped caring.
- Brother has a grudge against listening to music for leisure. He thinks there should be government censorship of music and praises China’s efforts in that respect.
- For all the popular culture insists that women trifle over any little thing their husbands do wrong, men will make up their minds that their wives are being unfaithful and then kill her.
- Pozdnyshev tells the narrator how at peace he is while taking a carriage ride because he forgets about his wife. Every moment he isn’t thinking about his wife, he seems to be blissful. Dude just needs to be a bachelor. There’s not anything wrong with being single. Have consensual sex with people and move on.
- Unnecessary detail of saying that a Jewish man had a dirty carriage…
- He’s got the nerve to think his wife is going to confess her sins after he’s stabbed her fatally.
- In the end, Pozdnyshev concludes that he should not have married, which I agree with, but he fails to recognize the flaws within him that would drive him to abuse and murder. These are groomed conditions of patriarchal entitlement, not some inherent part of man. Every criticism I’ve had of men thus far, stems from this same root they’ve been suckled since birth.
- “Weh weh weh, I regret my actions!!”
- There is ending note from Tolstoy where he explains himself and it’s absurd lol It repeats the main points from the story and then gives interpretation of Christianity. I’m not a Christian and don’t care about Tolstoy’s religious interpretations.
